Establishment of TOCIC
TOCIC-SPMVV was established in 2013 at Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV), Tirupati, as part of the PRISM (Promoting Innovations in Individuals, Startups and MSMEs) scheme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. Over the decade from 2015 to 2025, the Technology Outreach cum Cluster Innovation Centre (TOCIC) at SPMVV, Tirupati, was established itself as a vital hub for innovation, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. Set up under the PRISM (Promoting Innovations in Individuals, Startups and MSMEs) scheme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India, TOCIC-SPMVV had played a pioneering role in empowering grassroots innovators particularly women, students, and rural entrepreneurs by helping them translate their ideas into viable and scalable technologies.
- From 2015 to 2025, TOCIC-SPMVV received a total of 351 innovation proposals across critical sectors including agriculture, healthcare, clean energy, environment, biotechnology, and education.
- Of these, 136 proposals were submitted to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) under the PRISM (Promoting Innovations in Individuals, Startups, and MSMEs) scheme, and 45 projects were sanctioned.
- Over this decade, the centre mentored more than 848 innovators, conducted around 115 innovation-focused events such as workshops, hackathons, and outreach camps, and supported the completion of 43 projects, with 2 more ongoing as of 2025.
- A key achievement of TOCIC-SPMVV has been the development and validation of more than 30 working prototypes, many of which were refined in collaboration with end users and domain experts.
- These innovations led to the filing of 14 patents and the initiation of a few start-ups, marking the centre’s role in strengthening intellectual property creation and commercialization.
- Through consistent efforts in mentoring, incubation, prototype development, and strategic outreach, TOCIC-SPMVV has established itself as a beacon of grassroots innovation in southern India, contributing significantly to inclusive, technology-led growth at local and regional levels.
